Course Side Dish

Ingredients

  • fresh bread (French bread is great, homemade bread also works)
  • butter
  • lemon pepper
  • garlic powder
  • Parmesan cheese finely grated

Instructions

  • Slice bread in relatively thick slices (not too thin)
  • Arrange bread slices on a cookie sheet
  • Spread soft butter evenly on all bread pieces. If the butter is too cold to spread well, you may microwave till it softens or melts, and apply with a knife or pastry brush
  • Season each with lemon pepper and garlic powder (Note: Do not use garlic salt if possible, it makes the toast too salty!)
  • Last, season each slice generously with finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • Toast in the oven on broil for 5 to 10 minutes, until slices are nicely browned and toasted. Do not overcook so they burn! It's worth standing right by the oven and watching, because depending on the oven rack you choose to use they can toast up fast! Usually I choose a mid-level oven rack.

Notes

This is a recipe I originally learned from my mom, Angie Fryer. It's become the 'traditional' way we always eat garlic toast at our house. I made bread in the accompanying photo in this recipe in my bread machine using the "French Countryside Bread" recipe from Food.com, which has become our favorite bread machine recipe so far.
In the past, however, we've generally just made garlic toast with a fresh loaf of French Bread from the grocery store.
Oh it's so good! Goes very well with chicken soup!
